Tesla App Assets Appear to Reveal Refined Optimus Gen 3 Robot Design

New digital assets discovered inside Tesla’s Android mobile app appear to offer the clearest look yet at the company’s next-generation Optimus humanoid robot. The images suggest Optimus Gen 3 is moving toward a more polished, production-oriented design, with covered joints, darker lower-leg panels and more refined hands.

The apparent leak comes as Tesla continues developing Optimus as part of its broader push into artificial intelligence and robotics. The humanoid project has attracted attention beyond the automotive industry because of its potential applications in manufacturing, logistics and other labour-intensive environments.

Tesla App Assets Show Changes to Optimus Gen 3

The renders were discovered within a Tesla Android app update by Tesla enthusiast @WholeMars. The images appear to show Optimus Gen 3 alongside earlier design assets associated with the Gen 2.5 prototype.

The comparison indicates several notable changes, particularly around the robot’s joints, lower body and overall exterior finish.

One of the most visible differences is around the pelvis and hip assembly. Gen 3 appears to use integrated flexible covers where the torso connects with the upper legs. The coverings conceal mechanical components and could help protect bearings and other moving parts from dust and debris.

They could also reduce exposed pinch points, an important consideration if humanoid robots are eventually expected to work around people in factories and other workplaces.

Black Panels Replace Gold-Toned Lower-Leg Components

The earlier Gen 2.5 design featured visible mechanical elements and gold-toned metallic sections around the knees and lower legs. The newly uncovered Gen 3 renders instead show matte black coverings in those areas.

The change creates a more consistent two-tone appearance combining black components with champagne-gold body panels.

Beyond aesthetics, the revised exterior suggests Tesla may be simplifying and enclosing components as it moves from experimental prototypes toward hardware intended for larger-scale manufacturing.

Overall body panel gaps also appear tighter in the new renders. The result is a streamlined silhouette that more closely resembles a finished commercial product than an exposed engineering prototype.

Optimus Gen 3 Hands Receive Major Redesign

Another significant area of development appears to be the robot’s arms and hands.

Tesla has previously said the Gen 3 version of Optimus features hands with 22 degrees of freedom. Greater freedom of movement is particularly important for humanoid robotics because many potential workplace tasks require precise manipulation of tools, components and everyday objects.

The newly surfaced assets suggest the hands have undergone substantial refinement compared with earlier Optimus prototypes, with a more integrated design and fewer visibly exposed mechanical elements.

Dexterity remains one of the major technical challenges facing humanoid robot developers. While walking and maintaining balance are important, the ability to reliably grip, manipulate and reposition objects is essential for robots intended to perform useful industrial tasks.

For Canadian industries, developments in humanoid robotics could eventually have implications for sectors including automotive manufacturing, warehousing, mining and advanced manufacturing, although widespread commercial deployment remains dependent on cost, reliability and workplace safety.

Production Focus Becomes Clearer

Tesla has positioned Optimus Gen 3 as the generation designed with mass production in mind.

The design visible in the app assets appears consistent with that objective. Enclosed mechanical components, simplified exterior surfaces and more integrated body panels could potentially make the robot easier to assemble, protect and maintain.

However, images contained within an application do not by themselves confirm that every design feature will appear on the final production model. Tesla could continue modifying Optimus before commercial manufacturing begins.

The company has also been relatively quiet about the humanoid robot program in recent months.

Public Optimus Gen 3 Reveal Still Awaited

Tesla previously postponed a public unveiling of Optimus Gen 3, with chief executive Elon Musk saying the robot required a few “finishing touches” before its presentation.

Another indication of the design emerged when Tesla’s Optimus program leadership showed a silhouette of the Gen 3 robot during an engineering presentation. The newly discovered app renders provide considerably more visual detail than that earlier preview.

Tesla is also preparing other major product announcements, including its next-generation Roadster, which could affect the timing of a dedicated Optimus presentation.

For now, the mobile app assets provide an unofficial preview rather than a formal product unveiling. Still, the changes shown in the renders point to Tesla placing greater emphasis on manufacturing readiness, improved dexterity and a more finished industrial design as Optimus Gen 3 moves closer to its next stage of development.
