Schools were closed in major cities including Boston and New York, hundreds of flights were canceled and drivers warned of dangerous conditions as the winter storm battered the Northeast.

The system was named Winter Storm Lorraine by The Weather Channel. As it approached the East Coast it was on a nor'easter track, which occurs when winds blow from the Atlantic Ocean into a strong area of ​​low pressure from the northeast.

Meteorologists refer to the 40/70 scale when talking about snowfall in the Northeast.

This line is a spot on the map at 40 degrees north latitude and 70 degrees west longitude, and is the “sweet spot” of a low snowfall event.

(10:25 a.m. ET) More than a foot of snow in some places

Some snowfall updates from Weather.com Senior Meteorologist Jonathan Erdman:

LaGuardia and John F. Snow is still falling at a rate of 1 inch per hour at both Kennedy airports.

Fifteen inches of snow has now fallen in Shohola, Pennsylvania.

The north Philly suburb of Windmoor has a report of 3.2 inches of snow.

– Up to 11 inches fell in Hartford, Connecticut.

(10:12 a.m. ET) Power outages top 150,000

more than 140,000 According to PowerOutage.us, homes, businesses and other utility customers are without power in Pennsylvania. The outages are mainly in a band in the southeastern corner of the state, with the largest number in Schuylkill County.

West Virginia and New Jersey both reported 13,000 outages each.

Wet, heavy snow can bring down trees and power lines later in the day.

(9:45 am ET) Beware of 'Heart Attack' Snow

As we mentioned during Winter Storm Jerry 4 weeks ago, even with only 2 or 3 inches of snow, it's not a good idea to try to shovel any of this, especially if you have a lot of sidewalks/driveways.

This is heavy, wet, “heart attack” snow. Great at making snowmen. Horrible for the spade.

(9:15 am ET) I-81 Northbound is partially closed in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania officials have announced the closure of a portion of Interstate 81. The closure affects the northbound lanes at mile marker 29 in Southampton Township.

The decision was taken after several vehicles crashed or got stranded Due to weather conditions, according to WHP-TV. The highway is an important artery for travelers heading to cities as far north as Harrisburg or Scranton.

(8:35 a.m. ET) New York City under travel advisory; Parking rules are suspended

A travel advisory will be in effect at the start of the workday, according to NYC Emergency Management. New Yorkers are asked to stay off the roads if possible as road crews respond to evolving weather conditions. Rules for this Alternate side parking is closed All day though parking meters are active.

In winter storms, we often see relatively narrow bands of heavy snow accumulation, usually with sharp frontal zones – what meteorologists call “frontogenesis.” Snowfall rates in excess of 1 inch per hour can occur in these bands, sometimes with lightning.

Meanwhile, 6 to 10 inches of snow has already accumulated from central Pennsylvania to southwest of Hartford, Connecticut.

(8:10 am ET) Snow threatens to chill voter turnout in New York special election

A snowstorm could cast a shadow over the race to control a key congressional seat left vacant by the departure of Jorge Santos as New York City's suburbs prepare for a special election on Tuesday. With turnout projections already low due to the shortened race period, the added challenge of inclement weather could further hurt voter efforts.

(7:55 a.m. ET) The mild change means changes to the forecast for millions

Meteorologist Dominica Davies explains in this video that the low associated with Winter Storm Lorraine is a little farther south, and that means a change in higher expected snowfall totals. As a result, the snow forecast for Boston was downgraded, and parts of southern New England are expected to finish this storm with more snow.

The Weather Channel braved the elements in several places this morning. Meteorologist Mike Seidel reported live from New York City's Central Park, where more than an inch of snow has fallen so far. BladeRunner 2.0, a new way for New York City officials to clear streets after snowstorms Announced in December.

The technological improvement improved on New York City's old plowing system, which plowed only primary streets, then secondary and tertiary streets. Now, officials say every bike lane, street and highway will be salted and then plowed. Once the snow reaches 2 inches.

– Drums and Richfield, Pennsylvania: 9 inches each
