Five officers shot and wounded in Minnesota, officials say; The suspect is not in custody

Authorities say five law enforcement officers were shot and killed in an incident near the east-central Minnesota city of Princeton.

PRINCETON, Minn. — Five law enforcement officers were shot and killed in an incident Thursday morning near the east-central Minnesota city of Princeton, authorities said.

The suspect was not taken into custody and the incident was ongoing hours later.

Three officers were taken to North Memorial Hospital in the Minneapolis suburb of Robbinsdale, and two to a hospital in St. Cloud, said Robbinsdale Police Capt. John Elder, who attended the hospital and said no injuries appeared. Must be life threatening.

The senior said he did not immediately know which department the injured officers belonged to, but they were from multiple agencies.

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office provided few details in its initial report. The department said several public safety agencies were assisting with a “significant incident” unfolding in Glendorado Township, a few miles west of Princeton. There is no danger to the general public, however the public is being asked to avoid the area.

Video footage from KMSP-TV showed numerous law enforcement vehicles and officers in tactical gear. KARE-TV’s video shows law enforcement gathered in a rural area with tree houses surrounded by agricultural fields. An armored vehicle was driving by the side of a field.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension confirmed that it was among the companies that responded.

The area is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of Minneapolis.
