WINNIPEG (January 26th, 2010) -- Mayor Sam Katz today delivered
his 6th annual State of the City address, hosted by the Winnipeg
Chamber of Commerce, to an audience of over 1,100 at the Winnipeg
Convention Centre.
Katz focused his 2010 address on the accomplishments Council has
made over the Mayor’s terms in office, as well as the many
positive projects that are currently taking place and creating
an era of excitement in Winnipeg.
The Mayor also discussed the importance of making sure Winnipeggers
take the necessary steps in ensuring that this momentum continues
over the coming years.
Some highlights from the Mayor’s 2010 speech include:
• Measures taken over the last 6 years to address public
safety, improving infrastructure, rebuilding recreational facilities,
and ensuring Winnipeg is a positive city to work, live and play.
• A plea to the Provincial government to revisit the Clean
Environment Commission’s recommendation to force the City
to spend $350 million and $9 million annually to remove Nitrogen
from our wastewater, despite the hard science of over 60 leading
scientists who believe this is a waste of money and perilous to
the health of Lake Winnipeg.
• A commitment to once again freeze property taxes for the
13th consecutive year, keeping Winnipeg competitive and among
the lowest property taxes in Canada.
In addition, Mayor Katz and The Chamber are pleased to announce
that 50% of the net proceeds from the State of the City will be
donated to local charities Agape Table and Osborne House.
